COMMENTARY: It would appear that there are several stark differences between how Chinese students use technology devices in the classroom compared to students in the U.S. Chinese students are more likely to use their devices to colloborate with other students, use technology in all of their classroom curriculum and for technology training. In the U.S. students are more likely to use technology for classroom research and special assignments. 57% of all Chinese students use technology in the classroom 1-2 hours per day, compared to only 30% of U.S. students. 96% of Chinese students are more like to bring their own technology devices to school, compared to only 69% in the U.S. Chinese students (79%) and teachers (90%) are getting more technology training compared to the U.S. students (41%) and teachers (24%). Chinese students consider their teachers more tech savvy than them, where the reverse is true in the U.S.
It is very obvious from Dell's findings, that U.S. students are lagging behind their Chinese counterparts when it comes to technology in the classroom, and this is probably due to demographic and economic reasons. The Great Recession and spending cutbacks in the schools has left teachers to fend for themselves. Many students are the children of a single parent, and the parents are unable to afford technology devices for their children.
