Here's a great clip of Steve Jobs doing some Q&A with developers at the 1997 WWDC.
Jobs says Apple was not focused enough, it was saying "yes" to too many projects, and it meant the total of Apple was worth less than the sum of its parts. Said Jobs,
"Focusing is about saying no."

COMMENTARY: Apple was on the brink of financial collapse when Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997. Steve knew that Apple needed a new business model if it was to survive over the longterm. Steve quickly and methodically began the arduous process of reorganizing, reshapping and refocusing Apple. Part of Steve's refocusing effort included the development of a master plan or Grand Vision for Apple which he referred to as the Digital Hub Strategy.
In a blog post dated March 28, 2011, I described in great detail why I believe that his Digital Hub Strategy was grand vision in making Apple into one of the most innovative technology companies in the world today. If you are an entrepreneur, "put a dent in the universe" and "think differently". Steve urges entrepreneurs not to sell product benefits, but something for the betterment of mankind. Steve has stuck to that strategy for nearly 20 years, and his trackrecord of achievement beginning with the iPod, iPhone, iTunes and now the iPad is unmatched in the field of consumer entertainment and communications.
