In the past, America has led the world in the fields of education, business, science, medicine and technology. However, drastic shifts in the World Economy, the destruction of our manufacturing base, the raping our public school system by politicians, demographic shifts and changing trends in higher education are now endangering our leads in the fields of science, engineering and technology. If these disturbing trends continue, America will slowly lose its competitive edge and leadership in innovation.
If we are to prepare American workers for the jobs of the future, we must educate them in preparation for those new job opportunities. In my previous blog post, "Trends in Higher Educaton", I visually demonstrated which fields of study our most popular among today's college students. The following chart, "Educating The Workforce of the Future", shows the jobs of the future that require higher educational attainment. The chart also shows where the job opportunities are going to be, which jobs are growing, which jobs are dying, and the highest and lowest paying jobs.

We are facing some very tough choices, as many industries are being left behind due to job outsourcing or technological advances. Job retraining is now a necessity in declining or dying industries. Our workforce will either have to adapt to the educational requirements of these new job opportunitires or industrial and technological changes, or lose out economically.
